3 beautiful days of sun.
A parade (a p'yade!") Reid loves a parade. Want to go to a parade? "Yeh! I go to p'yade! Brudder go to p'yade! Mommy go to p'yade! Daddy go to p'yade!" he shouts, arms still waving as he runs out the door to the car before we're even packed.
Motorcycles, lights, sirens, candy!
Spencer usually likes a good parade too but he woke up Saturday morning dehydrated and I think might have suffered from heat stroke all day :( We cuddled Saturday morning under a fan and a cool cloth. "I know you didn't have screen time when you were little," he told me very matter of factly, "cuz you didn't have TV's in the old days." Since he was being so snuggly and he followed that up with the cutest line about really liking a particular radio station because "it talks about your feelings and stuff" - I let that one slide....
He rallied after a juice for the parade, and was so anxious to see his cousins, but unfortuatnely he went downhill as the morning progressed.
Seeking shade w/his hat full of loot
Do you know what Memorial Day is about? I asked him. "Yes, Mrs T told us all about it. It's about the soldiers and everything they did for us to make our world and stuff....but you're suppose to have a picnic on Memorial Day too" he informed me.
We had a weekend full of picnics.
From the parade we went straight to Uncle Joe's for a family picnic. I was hoping seeing his cousins would snap Spencer out of his funk but he was pretty lethargic all day. Didn't eat anything but a chocolate icecream and I don't think he even finished that.
He stayed mostly in the shade and on the sidelines. The girls made sure he wasn't too lonely.
Spencer tried really hard to hang with his boy cousins but he just didn't have the energy. "They don't want to do what I want to do" he said sadly. What do you want to do? I asked him. "Well, just sit on a rock." I stifled my smile.
Mustering it up for a kickball game
Reid had enough energy for both of them. Probably ate enough for both of them too! Thanks to the bigger cousins for playing ball and hula hoop with him!
Hysterical blue ball.
After the family gathering we all travelled down to Uncle Tony's for a swim in the pool. It's official: Reid still LOVES the water (and Alli)
Spencer was still quiet, but pretty happy in it too.
He insisted on staying over at Nana's when we suggested going home. He looked just exhausted but he would not give in. There was lots of baseball with the boys.
And then immediate passing out in sleeping bags side by side.
Sunday morning Spencer seemed more like himself again (which is why we think it was heat stroke following the dehydration - he'd had an active, active hot week with school parties, walk'athons, etc).
He went to breakfast with Grampa, which he loves to do and had 2 OJ's and a half of chocolate chip pancake.
We caught Uncle Ryan's softball game! More ball! So happy here in the box with his cousins (I should add that ball was such a big part of the weekend, the first thing he wanted to do when he got home was play catch).
Reid liked a little ball too! (Here with Uncle Tony).
Sunday afternoon we headed back home for yard work
and yard play.
We planted the garden.
(Reid throwing the seed the first time)
All of our neighbors planted their garden too and you know what that means? It means that the adults got to play around the neighborhood just like the kids usually do.
One of the neighbors gave us some extra seedlings so we made a mini garden for Spence on the front deck with them. They're his responsibility to take care of. Here he is DROWNING them.
On Monday Spence and I made a spontaneous trip to the grocery store and bought all kinds of picnic treats. So excited about the picnic basket.
and the pickle that was bigger than his hand
and the watermelon
and the baby ducks
and the games
I was most excited to be with my boys and the best views.
the best, best, best views
We ended the 3 day wkend with more swimming, more sun, more play and more food at our back neighbors
Pretty much perfect.
